Improved Quick Start Panel
Check out new improvements to the TradeLog 9 Quick Start Panel. The panel is more intuitive than ever to provide you critical instructions right when you need them. The Quick Start Panel has moved to the bottom of the TradeLog window so that it won't interfere with the main menus and toolbars. Want to resize the Quick Start Panel? You can now size the panel as big or as little as you like, simply click on the border and drag up or down to change the size.
If you’re a TradeLog pro and you do not need the Quick Start Panel, you can disable it in your Global Options settings, or use the Ctrl+Q keyboard shortcut to toggle off or on.

New Quick Start Guide Steps
TradeLog 9 includes a revised Quick Start Guide. Adjustments were made to the eight steps:
- In the past, step 5 was to Analyze Your Data. This step has been removed. Although TradeLog still contains many excellent trade analysis tools, these can be utilized at many different stages of TradeLog use.
- Step 5 of the revised Quick Start Guide is now dedicated to the process of reconciling 1099-B with TradeLog – a critical step that must be done for accurate tax reporting.
The TradeLog 9 Quick Start Panel reflects the revised Quick Start Guide steps.
New Enter Baseline Positions Function
Entering baseline positions is a very important step for first time users of TradeLog, or anyone using TradeLog for reporting an account for the first time. TradeLog 9 makes this step easier with a function: Enter Baseline Positions. This function is listed under the Add menu, or can be activated using the F7 shortcut key.
Once you start the Enter Baseline Positions function, a notice will display on the bottom of the window to indicate you are “Entering Baseline Positions”.
To exit this mode, simply hit the Esc key. If you later find you missed some baseline positions, you can go back to enter more by choosing the function again.
New Open Positions View
A big change has been made to how you view open positions in TradeLog 9. When you click Open on the toolbar, TradeLog will go into Open Position View. You can view positions as of the end of the tax year – or you can now view your open positions as of a given date you select! Using your broker statements you can go to a specific date and verify positions held open for data accuracy.
The TradeLog window will list the positions that were open as of the date chosen. You can drill down to view position details by double clicking on each position listed.
Improved Exercise/Assign Function
The function for adjusting exercised options and assigned stock has been improved to handle more complex situations in TradeLog 9 – and using the function is easier than ever! Simply choose the option that is exercised, right click the trade and choose the Exercise/Assign function (or choose from the Edit menu, or use the Ctrl+E shortcut). Follow the prompts as TradeLog will identify the assigned stock and make the necessary adjustments automatically.
New Security Types for Mutual Funds and Dividend Reinvestment Plans (DRIPs)
As part of the new IRS reporting needs, TradeLog 9 now includes two new security types: MUT-1 identifies Mutual Funds; DRP-1 identifies Dividend Reinvestment Plan stocks.
- Over 20,000 mutual funds are recognized by ticker symbol with default TradeLog settings. Additional tickers can be added in the Global Options.
- Since Dividend Reinvestment Plans are elective and available for a variety of stocks, you must identify DRIP securities in your account(s). This is done through a new editing function: Change Type/Mult.
These new security types have been added to help better identify and classify trades for reporting on IRS Form 8949.
New IRS Form 8949 for Tax Year 2011 Onward
Users who file capital gains and losses on Schedule D are required to generate the new IRS Form 8949 for 2011 onward. TradeLog 9 includes this new reporting.

Under the Reports menu, Gains & Losses; Tax Forms option, a new report option is available: Form 8949. (Note, for tax year files for years prior to 2011, this report is not available, instead the traditional Schedule D-1 form is available). When you run Form 8949 reporting TradeLog will generate each 8949 required (for Short-Term and Long-Term; and for Categories A, B, and C – a total of up to 6 different possible forms). A Schedule D form will also be generated with the totals of each Form 8949 entered for assisting in your final tax reporting.
Want to E-File you Form 8949? The TaxACT and TurboTax export options are now provided directly from the Form 8949 preview in TradeLog.

Tip: the Form 8949 is not easy to read as trades have to be categorized and reported a particular way. If you need to get a detailed look at your tax reporting run the Gains & Losses report for your record. The TradeLog Gains & Losses report lists all your calculations and adjustments in one report, with line-by-line totals and detailed wash sale records – the data is the same as that reported on Form 8949 but easier to read.
Under the Hood
Many changes have been made to TradeLog that are not noticeable to users immediately. Months of work was done "under the hood" to make TradeLog more robust and to better support current and future operating environments. This also positions TradeLog for even more cool enhancements and needed features to come!
TradeLog 9 includes a new debug capture feature, if TradeLog detects an operating error or potential bug then a dialog box appears with system information and an option to send a bug report to the TradeLog Development Team. This will help our support and development team to resolve bugs that may occur in the software and identify special operating environments. If this occurs while you are using TradeLog, you will be prompted with instructions.
