Create a new data file for each brokerage account and each tax year:
Note: Within TradeLog each tax year and each brokerage account that you are working on must have a separate data file created. (For example, if you have an account at Fidelity and one at Schwab then you will have two data files for the 2010 tax year: '2010 Fidelity', and '2010 Schwab'.) TradeLog has been designed to match trades for one brokerage account per year, per data file. If you have multiple taxable accounts you will be provided instructions for creating a combined reporting file in Step 6 of the Quick Start Guide.
-
Please seethe lesson: Creating a Data File under Step 1 in our Online Tutorial for a video discussion of how to use this function in TradeLog.
Creating a new data file:
-
Click File, New
-
Select the Tax Year you are working on and give the file a descriptive name. The descriptive name should enable you to easily identify the data file.
Note: Do NOT put a year or date in the descriptive name. TradeLog will automatically include the tax year you selected in the file name. Remember, the tax year may be different than the current year. It is important that you select the tax year for the data that is going into the file.
Examples of properly named data files are "Ameritrade", "IB Account 123456" and "Schwab Joe Smith"
Note: If you wish to save your files to another location on your hard drive besides the default location,
please click here for further instructions.
We highly recommend using the default location.
-
Click OK.
-
Select an Import Filter. This should typically be the same as the broker for the account the data file will represent. Click the drop down button to make your selection.
-
Next select your Default Import Method. Click the drop down button and the available options for importing will be displayed. If BrokerConnect is available this is the preferred method of importing.
To see the options available for importing from your broker, and detailed instructions, please review our Broker Support Matrix
