Shares open long and short for the same ticker
This issue occurs when trades have not been matched correctly in a data file, usually due to errors on broker trade history reports or changes to ticker symbols due to stock splits or mergers. The trade matching problem must be fixed before a proper Profit or Loss value can be calculated. The following is an example to demonstrate how this issue can be resolved:
Data in the Open Positions Window:
-
Click Find, Ticker to display all transactions for the ticker with long and short positions.
-
The Find Ticker popup window will appear. In the field provided, type "BVSN"
-
Click OK. The resulting grid will only display transactions for BVSN.
Data in the Grid:
-
Analyze the two trades. TrNum 88 should have been recorded as a "close, long" rather than an "open, short". This would have closed another 1800 shares from TNum 61.
-
Single-left click on any cell in the record for TrNum 88 to select it.
-
Hit the <F2> function key to open the record for editing.
-
Change the trade number to "61", the open to "C" for close and the short to "L" for long.
-
Hit <Enter> twice to save your changes (for version 5.x and up, you can also click File, Save).
-
TradeLog will automatically re-sort and re-number your trades. The result will be TrNum having zero shares open.
NOTE: You may not be able to find a transaction with the exact number of shares, and therefore you may have to edit several transactions to resolve the issue.
