Using a Standard (Non-MTM) version of TradeLog
In order to mark all of your futures positions to year end prices in a non-MTM version of TradeLog, manual entry of these records is required. Below is an example of how to do this:
A. With your file open and all transactions imported, click OPEN, Year End Open Positions, and then close the Open Positions dialog box.
B. The grid will now display all open positions as of year end. Find the first Section 1256 contract position (marked as FUT- in the type column), and double-click on this position.
C. The grid will now be showing the isolated open position you selected.
-
Now go to the Add menu, select Add Record (or hit the F5 key on your keyboard). A new record will be inserted into your file.
-
In the Date column of the new record, enter a date of 12/31 of the year you are working on.
-
In the O/C column, type or select 'M'.
-
The number of shares should automatically be the total number of shares open for that position.
-
In the Price column you will need to enter the price as of December 31 for these contracts (Look at the account holdings section on your Dec statement.)
View the example below:
D. After filling out the record hit Enter, Enter. TradeLog will prompt you to save the record. Click Yes. TradeLog will then prompt you to enter another transaction. Click Yes. Another new record will be created.
-
In the Date column of the new record, enter a date of 01/01 of the NEXT year.
-
In the O/C column, type or select 'O'.
-
The number of shares should automatically be the total number of shares open for that position.
-
In the Price column you will need to enter the same price as of December 31 for these contracts as you entered in the previous step.

E. Hit Enter, Enter on your keyboard to save the record. Click Yes to save records when prompted. This position has now been properly marked-to-market.
When prompted to 'Enter another transaction?', click No.
F. Repeat steps A through E above for all open Section 1256 contracts at year end.
After all Section 1256 contracts have been marked-to-market, you may run the Gains & Loss Report on the futures. Please view the instructions HERE
