When downloading an Excel or CSV file file from the web it opens a copy of Excel in my web browser rather than popping up the File Download dialog box.

This problem is caused by your inadvertently overriding the default Windows settings for file downloads from the web. Windows XP and Windows Vista allow users to choose how they want to handle certain file downloads from the Internet.

For example, when downloading an Excel or CSV file from the Internet you have the option to tell your web browser to always open it with Excel.  The check box is labeled "Do this automatically for files like this from now on."

However, once checked you will no longer be presented with the option to save such files to your hard drive, and downloaded Excel and CSV files will always open in Excel. In addition, there now is no easy way to restore the default which asks whether you want to save the file to your hard drive or open it with Excel. This also prevents TradeLog from importing your downloaded Excel or CSV file.

To fix this problem and restore the default Windows setting for downloading files from the web, please perform the following 3 steps:

  1. Download the following registry settings text file and save to your desktop:

  2. Right-click on the csvprompt.reg text file that you just saved to your desktop and select Merge.

  3. Windows will change your registry settings back to the default which pops up a file download box whenever you download an Excel or CSV file from the web.

Note:  After completing these steps, it is important to NOT check the "Do this automatically..."  box again when saving or opening downloaded files. If you do so you will continue to have this problem and will have to repeatedly run the fix.
